Clutch maintenance requires comprehensive attention to driving habits, regular inspections, component cleaning and lubrication, and load control. Specific maintenance methods are as follows:
1. Driving Habits
Starting and Shifting
Starting: Release the clutch pedal slowly to avoid sudden releases that could cause the vehicle to jerk or stall. Maintaining the engine speed between 1200 and 1500 rpm is recommended for starting. Excessive rpm increases clutch strain.
Shifting: When shifting, press the clutch pedal fully to ensure smooth gear shifting and prevent gear rattling. After shifting, release the pedal slowly to ensure smooth power transfer.
Prohibited Behavior: Avoid prolonged driving with the clutch engaged (e.g., in traffic jams), as this will accelerate clutch plate wear. In these situations, shift the vehicle into neutral and apply the parking brake.
Pedal Operation Guidelines
Use the sole of your left foot to firmly press the pedal. Press and release the pedal using the natural flexion and extension of your knee and ankle. Avoid using your toes, heel, or the entire sole of your foot.
Pedal operation should be quick and accurate to ensure the clutch engages and disengages promptly. Immediately remove your foot after full engagement to prevent prolonged periods of partial engagement.
II. Regular Inspection and Adjustment
Clutch Fluid Inspection
Check the clutch fluid reservoir (usually shared with the brake fluid reservoir) monthly to ensure the fluid level is above the "MIN" mark. If the fluid level drops, refill or replace the clutch fluid promptly, and check the hydraulic system for leaks.
If clutch fluid splashes onto the vehicle's painted surface, rinse immediately with clean water to prevent corrosion.
Pedal Responsiveness Inspection
When depressing the clutch pedal, check for weak rebound, unusual noise, excessive looseness, or heaviness. Any abnormalities require prompt adjustment or repair.
Check the pedal's free travel regularly; it should generally be between 15-25mm (refer to the vehicle manual for details). If this is not the case, adjust the front tie rod length or the position of the LE ring/nut.
Operating Mechanism Maintenance
Regularly adjust the clutch operating mechanism, remove dirt, tighten all connecting bolts, and lubricate the clutch pedal shaft as required. For mechanically operated clutches, check that the pedal's neutral distance is approximately 20mm. For hydraulically operated clutches, check that the pedal and brake pedal are at the same height. Listen for the pedal's click or use pliers to check the travel. If any abnormality is detected, adjust the lock nut and adjusting nut.
III. Component Cleaning and Lubrication
Release Bearing Maintenance
Release bearings are exposed to the elements for extended periods, resulting in poor lubrication. They should be removed and cleaned after every 300-500 hours of operation. After thorough cleaning with diesel fuel, place them in a container of butter and heat until the butter penetrates the bearing. Allow to cool and solidify before reinstalling.
Lubrication of the Release Claw and Bearing Cap
The area between the release claw and the spiral bevel of the bearing cap must be kept clean and lubricated with engine oil or butter. Regularly add engine oil to the small oil hole on the release claw to lubricate the claw and claw seat.
Cleaning and Replacing Friction Pads
If the friction pads, drive plates, or pressure plate are stained with oil or rust, disassemble and clean them. Clean them with gasoline or kerosene and allow them to dry before reinstalling. Check the friction plate for exposed rivet heads, cracks, chipping, extensive burns, or wear to a thickness of less than 3.4mm. If any signs are present, replace them immediately.
Clutch Bearing Dust Protection
After cleaning or replacing the clutch bearing, apply a generous amount of grease and ensure the side with the dust cover faces the clutch to prevent oil and dirt from entering and causing slippage.
